About the Homework Cafe
-
We are happy you are here! We are excited to get to know you more this year. Fusion Academy is a safe and inclusive environment for BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ students and their allies.
As you know, classes at Fusion are one teacher and one student. After each class, students come to the Homework Cafe to work on their assignments, and everyone shares that space together. The goal is to complete all your work on campus. That way, when you get home, you can just be a person. We want to help you feel balanced and take homework off your plate.
-
Our Homework Cafe teachers will help you with academic coaching, executive functioning support, and using your notes/resources to solve problems. We are not necessarily subject-area experts, and the Homework Cafe is not a space for 1:1 tutoring. If you get stuck on a problem, an HC teacher will guide you towards your class resources and notes, model how to find tools to solve the problem, and/or encourage you to revisit the material with your teacher.
-
The Homework Café is also the main hub of social activities on campus! We have lots going on, including lunchtime games, student meetings, events, clubs, field trips, fun nights, Prom, volunteer & community service opportunities in our "Community Action Program." You can find out about events on our “Upcoming Events” page, as well as on the calendar in the Homework Cafe. We post clubs and events on Facebook and Instagram, as well as in our weekly emails during the school year. As you can see, the Homework Café is kind of like the living room of Fusion, where we take care of the whole student: academic, social and emotional.

Sign outs are a homework support system which we use at fusion to help students complete all of their homework on campus. Students on sign outs show a Homework Cafe teacher that they have completed all of their homework in the hour following their class (and/or sometimes at the end of your day). If a student does not finish all of their assignments by the end of the day, we send an email home to help families give any extra reminders. We work hard to frame sign-outs as a support system, rather than a punitive one. We just want to help you take homework off your plate at home, and sign-outs help make sure we can help you get in a good rhythm on campus. You may find you don’t need them after a while, and that’s a-ok!

Students are assigned Extended Homework Cafe by their teachers as a support to get caught up on homework. What this means is that you need to come in for extra time to complete your assignment. This is typically on Friday, but it can be whatever time works for your schedule.
We try hard to help students see this process as a positive support, and not a punitive process. We want each student to head into the weekend with all work completed to help them feel successful and prepared for the week ahead. We will update you on Thursday evening via email if Extended School has been assigned.
